Dr. Thomas O. Binford has been Professor of Computer Science (Research)
in the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory
from 1981 to the present. He has been with the Artificial Intelligence
Laboratory since 1970. He has led a world class research program in Intelligent
Systems for Computer
Vision and Robotics at the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory for more
than a decade. Dr. Binford has contributed
in the areas of computer vision, artificial intelligence and
robotics. He originated the representation of
shape by generalized cylinders, based on generalized translational invariance,
merging swept volumes with swept surfaces. He was one of the pioneers of
"structured light" depth ranging methods. He contributed to segmentation
of images with the Binford-Horn line finder and more recently with aggregation
methods for building canonical structures in images. He contributed to
model-based vision in the ACRONYM system including geometric modeling.
He has contributed to recognition of complex objects based on indexing
of subclasses of similar objects (with Nevatia). He has contributed to
the generic interpretation of surfaces from line drawings, stereo images,
and other information. Dr. Binford has a strong interest in
AI in manufacturing. Under his leadership, Stanford has led the world in
training students in robotics.
Dr. Binford was at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
in the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory from 1967 to 1970.
He carried out research in artificial intelligence for computer vision,
especially representation of shape, interpretation of images,
edge finding, and LISP programming systems.
Dr. Binford held a Fulbright Fellowship at the Tata Institute of Fundamental
Research, Bombay, India during 1965-196, where he investigated
experimental elementary particle physics in the areas of:
partial wave analysis of hyperon production by pions;
and Regge-pole analysis of elastic scattering.
He received the PhD in Physics from the University of Wisconsin in 1965
where he investigated charge independence in hyperon production and
Regge-pole phenomenology. He received the
BS in physics from Pennsylvania State University in 1957.
